Mighty Lake Michigan
Lake Michigan stretches approximately 307 miles (494 km) from north to
south across a breadth of 118 miles (190 km) between the states of
Wisconsin and Michigan. Its average depth is 279 feet (85 meters) and
its maximum depth is 925 feet. The world's largest freshwater dunes
line the lakeshore. The total length of the shoreline, including
islands is 1,638 miles, or 2,633 km. Lake Michigan water flows through
the Straits of Mackinac into Lake Huron. They are actually two lobes
of the same lake, retaining water for an average of 99 years.
