Earth Observations from Satellites Module Summary

Congratulations!

You've just learned some important principles in remote sensing. Here are some important things you should now understand:

  • LEO satellites orbit the Earth from pole to pole, and collect data as the Earth rotates beneath them.
  • GEO satellites orbit the Earth hovering over a single point as the Earth spins.
  • Remote sensing data from both types of satellites has become invaluable in many aspects of modern life.

Further Investigation

The links in the side bar will take you to web sites where you can obtain up-to-date satellite imagery. Here are some things to remember based on what you've just learned:

  • Only LEO satellites can collect high quality data over the poles.
  • GEO satellites may scan a hemisphere of Earth, or fixed regions of that hemisphere at regular intervals.
  • Various compromises are made in configuring these satellites which affect the amount and quality of data produced.
