Summer

Astronomically speaking, summer begins on the summer solstice, when the Sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer (23oN), typically on or around June 21st in the northern hemisphere.
The summer season is the period of time between the summer solstice and the autumnal equinox .

For weather and climate records, the summer season refers to the months of June, July, and August.


Winter

Astronomically speaking, winter begins on the winter solstice, when when the Sun is directly over the Tropic of Capricorn (23oS), typically on or around December 21st in the northern hemisphere.
The season of autumn is the period of time between the winter solstice and the vernal equinox.

For weather and climate records, winter refers to the months of December, January, and February.
