Great Lakes Weather and Climate - The Transition Seasons

prevnext

Spring

Astronomically speaking, spring begins on the vernal equinox, when Earth's tilt relative to the Sun is zero and the hours of daylight and darkness are approximately equal at all latitudes, typically on or around March 21st in the northern hemisphere.
The spring season is the period of time between the vernal equinox and the summer solstice.

For weather and climate records, the spring season refers to the months of March, April and May.

Autumn

Astronomically speaking, autumn begins on the autumnal equinox, the other day that Earth's tilt relative to the Sun is zero, and the hours of daylight and darkness are approximately equal at all latitudes, typically on or around September 22nd in the northern hemisphere.
The season of autumn is the period of time between the autumnal equinox and the winter solstice.

For weather and climate records, autumn refers to the months of September, October, and November.
