The Biological Pump and the Significance of Upwelling - Module Summary

back forward, disabled

In this follow-up image for the previous exercise, the wind in the direction shown has caused an upwelling event, bringing nutrients to the surface for phytoplankton to grow. The phytoplankton bloom is apparent as a greenish patch visible from space!

In this module you have explored the importance of upwelling on ocean productivity along coasts, and the various mechanisms that induce this type of upwelling. You now understand the physical forces involved in coastal upwelling; one of the mechanisms that run the "biological pump".

In the next module we will explore how satellites can be used to detect upwelling events and phytoplankton blooms, and gain practice identifying these conditions.
