FAQ
Where can I get assistance with my Data Management Plan?
The AOSS library is a great resource for Data Management Plans. UW libraries also has information available here: https://researchdata.wisc.edu/dmp-introduction/
If you need assistance, please reach out to <XXXXXX> (add in library email or contact) or to the AWARD office.
Why do I have to pay Research Computing fees on my project?
SSEC is fortunate to have a Technical Computing group to provide computing support and leadership at SSEC. Cost recovery for Research Computing services that are provided by the TC group is facilitated by assessing Research Computing Services on research proposals identified as requiring the specific, complex information technology services of the high performance research computing environment at SSEC to support the proposed research activities. The applied rate correlates to actual costs incurred by SSEC to provide these services, and applies to all SSEC/CIMSS research projects identified as research computing users. The rate is reviewed annually by SSEC Directors and UW administration and is included in applicable proposal budgets.
A sponsor sent me this (NDA, CDA, MOU, other document). Can I sign it?
No. Most agreements, including NDA’s that directly involve a specific researcher, will require additional review by RSP. Any document requiring a signature should be submitted to the 3rd floor Research Admin Team for review.
Can I buy a computer on my project?
It depends. There are a couple additional questions that must be asked before the answer is yes or no. Does the computer fall under the supply category (under $5K purchase) or would it be considered capital equipment? Was the purchase included in the original proposal submitted to the sponsor, or is this a need that was identified after the start of the project? Computer purchases are allowed on project funds but require additional review by SSEC administration to ensure they are compliant with sponsor requirements – it’s best to email the Research Admin Team and go from there.
Who do we contact if we want to hire someone?
Email Denise and Jessica with the following information: 1) new position or replacement, 2) project number/funding. SSEC leadership needs to approve all new positions, and some replacement positions. Recruitments can take anywhere from a few weeks (student) to a few months depending on the position. In preparation for a recruitment, please make sure your schedule has the time to take on the added work that will be needed for things like reviewing/scoring applicants, first and sometimes second interviews, etc. HR will guide you through the entire process to ensure all rules/laws are followed to execute a fair recruitment.
Where is SSEC’s Research Support Office located?
The Research Support Office including the Award Office, Purchasing Office, and HR Offices are located on the 3rd floor of the Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences building on the UW Madison campus in Madison Wisconsin.
