Regulatory Compliance
Effort Reporting
Effort must be reported and certified for all individuals who receive salary support from a sponsored project or who expend committed effort on a sponsored project, regardless of receiving salary support from the sponsor. The SSEC Award Office certifies effort monthly with the submission of their signed time-sheet. The Award Office monitors effort to ensure all effort requirements are met on funded projects.
Outside Activities Reporting
Faculty and staff participation in outside activities may generate conflicts between the needs of the institution and the outside entity. UW–Madison understands that these conflicts are common, frequently unavoidable, and can often be appropriately managed. All faculty, regardless of appointment, all academic staff with 50% or greater appointment, and all individuals listed as participants on human subject protocols or on federal grants are required to fill out an annual Outside Activities Report (OAR) and update whenever new outside activities are undertaken.
Export Controls
Even though openness in research and free dissemination of research results are core values at UW–Madison that are institutionalized in research policy, export control laws can still apply to many activities related to the teaching, research and service missions at UW–Madison.
The Export Control Office works to ensure compliance with U.S. Export Control laws and regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and Foreign Assets Control Regulations (FACR).

Intellectual Property (IP)
Intellectual Property (IP)
Intellectual Property (IP) is a term that frequently comes up in the course of performing research. Below are some resources to assist you in helping understand what IP is and what to do with it.
Intellectual Property (IP) Micro-Course by UW Libraries: What is IP? Legal definitions, Policy information, help resources
Bayh-Dole Act: This is United States legislation dealing with intellectual property arising from federal government-funded research that applies to all faculty, staff, and students working on projects. All Staff need to complete a Bayh-Dole agreement before proceeding to conduct research on UW projects to ensure compliance with this regulation.
WARF Invention Disclosure form: Do you think you have a revolutionary item, process, software, etc that might be worthy of a patent? If so, do not publicly disclose your idea. Instead, file your WARF disclosure and talk to experts about it.
Grant Expenditures
Expenditures on grants are monitored to ensure they are allocable, allowable and reasonable to the project in accordance with the award budget, sponsor guidelines and UW-Madison policy. All SSEC expenditures are reviewed to ensure they are compliant with grant terms and follow UW-Madison policy.
