Switching to Leaflet and Cesium
Posted: September 25, 2018
When we developed RealEarth in 2011, the most mature API for web mapping was Google. It has served us well for many years. However, within the Google Maps context we encountered limitations with implementing new choices of projections (other than web-Mercator). We also experienced interface disruptions as terms of use and the requirement of API keys became more stringent. Therefore we are on the verge of switching to the Leaflet API for the “flat map” and Cesium for new globe and polar views. This work has been underdevelopment for sometime, but will soon go live. We expect some things to break and some things to improve. Please let us know how it affects your use of the RealEarth browser experience. Thanks!
