Charles R. Bentley, an intrepid University of Wisconsin-Madison glaciologist and geophysicist who was among the first scientists to measure the West Antarctic Ice Sheet in the late 1950s, died Aug. 19 in Oakland, California. He was 87. Bentley spent the bulk of his career studying the Antarctic Ice Sheet and the continent beneath it.

The Aug. 2017 eclipse over North America was captured by NOAA's GOES-16 satellite. GOES-16 captured images of the eclipse every five minutes, from more than 20,000 miles away. The video was compiled by UW-Madison's Space Science and Engineering Center and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies.

In August, retired Colonel Tom Haig and former executive director of the UW-Madison Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC), was recognized for his early work with weather satellites and innovative leadership that helped to launch the field of satellite meteorology.
