Technical Computing

UW's Division of Information Technology (DoIT) recently completed an upgrade of the wireless network here in the Atmospheric, Oceanic & Space Sciences building.
Instead of connecting to "UWNet-Space_Sciences," you will now connect to "UWNet."
Some improvements you will notice as part of this upgrade:
- Faster speeds: maximum speed on the wireless network is increased nearly three-fold, from 54 Mbps to 150 Mbps. Note that speed is limited by distance; the further you are from the nearest wireless access point, the lower the connection speed available to you.
- No more daily logins: Previously, when connecting to wireless, users needed to open a web browser to login to campus network and had to re-authenticate daily. Now, you need only authenticate once per semester.
- Roaming: Once you have authenticated on UWNet here in AO&SS or at another UWNet location (e.g., Union South), you no longer need to connect to a new network name and re-login. Note that there are still some buildings with legacy wireless networks (e.g., UWNet-Weeks_Hall) where roaming doesn't work.
- Simplified guest access: Visitors can now self-register by entering their email address and gain access to the wireless network. Staff members no longer need to generate a guest NetID to provide wireless access to guests at SSEC.
- Eduroam access: You'll also notice a new 'eduroam' wireless network. Visitors/collaborators from eduroam member institutions who have setup eduroam on their device, can login using the same username and password they use back home.
