A Tale of Two Conferences: AGU Science Policy and Tri-Agency Climate Change Education

NOAA, NASA and NSF co-convened a conference for Climate Change Education (CCE) 17-20 April 2012 in Arlington, Virginia, to foster synergy between nearly 200 individuals representing projects funded by NSF Climate Change Education Partnerships programs, NASA Global Climate Change Education programs, and several NOAA Environmental Literacy initiatives such as Science on a Sphere (SOS).

The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) at the UW-Madison Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) had a strong showing at this gathering with 3 people representing 4 projects from CIMSS/SSEC.

Two weeks later on 30 April 2012, the American Geophysical Union (AGU) held its inaugural Science Policy meeting in Washington DC, a smaller meeting with one poster presentation from CIMSS. Along with the similar location and solid Wisconsin participation, SSEC visualization tools provided another common thread at these events with McIDAS- V playing a prominent role at breakout sessions during the tri-agency meeting and Vis5D animations exemplifying ways that science can inform policy at the AGU meeting.
