Director's NoteFred Best |
There are many connections between SSEC and various University-level committees and governance bodies. Here is an attempt to describe those connections and the people involved. Many thanks to those who tirelessly serve us so admirably.
Academic Staff members are served by the Academic Staff Assembly (ASA). The Academic Staff web page describes this organization as:
… an elected body of currently 98 districts that represent the interests of academic staff in governance and policy development at UW-Madison. The Assembly debates and votes on policy issues affecting academic staff presented by the Academic Staff Executive Committee (ASEC), members of Assembly standing committees, or the Assembly. They are one of the governance bodies that advise the chancellor.
At SSEC there are four districts represented in the ASA:
- Scientists and Instrumentation Innovators (Dist. 157): your representative is Wayne Feltz and the alternate is Dave Tobin. In addition, Wayne has just finished a term on the Academic Staff Executive Committee.
- Researchers (District 356): your representative is Mat Gunshor.
- Professionals and Managers - people with specialist, technologist, manager, or programmer in your title, (District 459): your representative is Mark Werner through July of this year. Denny Hackel has his name in as a replacement and if no other names are submitted by the end of March, he will assume that duty. If more names are submitted there will be an election in May. In addition to serving as the representative, Mark has been co-chair of the Districting and Representations Committee.
- Librarians (District 474): there is not a representative at this time.
Please see this month’s Academic Staff column by Wayne Feltz for more on the Academic Staff and how you can get involved. Note that there are many Academic Staff committees that one can serve on, and we encourage you to do so.
In addition to the above, Wayne Feltz and Jenny Hackle represent SSEC on the Graduate School Committee on Academic Staff Issues (CASI). This CASI advises the Graduate School dean on the formulation and review of all policies and procedures concerning its academic staff members, including personnel matters. Jenny’s term ends this year, but she hopes to continue serving. She will be on the ballot for the election that will occur at the end of March.
Both Classified and Academic staff at SSEC are represented on the Graduate School Equity and Diversity (E&D) Committee. This committee provides leadership and direction to the Graduate School Centers and Institutes as they integrate equity and diversity initiatives into their work environments. The SSEC representative on this committee is Eric Thompson. Eric attends the Graduate School E&D meetings and serves as the liaison between this committee and the internal SSEC E&D committee headed by Tom Demke.
SSEC Facebook page
On a completely different topic the newly designed monthly SSEC newsletter now has a title page that provides links to the re-designed newsletter and to archived newsletters. In addition, there is a link/like button to our new Facebook page. This is still a work in progress and we solicit your comments so we can continually improve the new layouts.
