Academic Staff

by Wayne Feltz

A few people have stopped by my office to ask how to have their voice heard on issues directly affecting academic staff. One way to keep up to date and engage in topics such as the graduate school reorganization, UW Madison’s separation from the UW system, and the impact of current state budget proposals on academic staff wages and benefits is to become involved in UW-Madison academic staff governance.

Back in 2003, Mark Mulligan and I helped initiate the Graduate School Committee on Academic Staff Issues (GS-CASI) as SSEC representatives. I have continued to serve on this committee in the role of vice chair since 2007 (The Dean of the Graduate School is the Chair). This governance body provides academic staff direct access to the Dean of the Graduate School and to the graduate school centers at large, creating networking opportunities to exchange ideas and solutions. GS-CASI serves to provide recommendations to the Dean about issues directly impacting the academic staff body across the Graduate School centers. For more information about this governance body, please visit the GS-CASI Web site.

The Academic Staff Assembly, another campus-wide academic staff governance body, meets every second Monday of each month (during academic year) in Room 270 in Bascom Hall.

As Academic Staff District Representatives, Mat Gunshor, Mark Werner, Dave Tobin, and I represent academic staff throughout our center. Provost Deluca and Chancellor Martin meet regularly with cross campus academic staff representatives.

The Academic Staff Assembly is open and there are multiple opportunities to serve on committees each year. For more information about the Academic Staff Assembly, please visit its Web site.

If you have other questions about academic staff, please consult this comprehensive academic staff frequently asked questions list.

Finally, if you are interested in becoming a part of campus governance, please see me and I would be happy to provide additional information.
