CIMSS Student Workshop Provides Pipeline to Science Careers

submitted by Patrick Rowley

Eight high school students (plus one high school teacher) from as far away as Connecticut participated in the 2012 CIMSS Student Workshop on Atmospheric, Satellite, and Earth Sciences on 24-28 June 2012. The workshop included field trips to WKOW-TV 27, Weather Central, the Aldo Leopold Nature Center (including NOAA's Science On a Sphere), the National Weather Service forecast office in Sullivan, the UW Geology Museum, the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery, Washburn Observatory (Sun spots at day and Saturn at Night!); and Rock Springs, Devil’s Lake, and Parfrey's Glen, for a tour of geologic features.

Numerous presentations at SSEC were given, including: Earth System Science, Satellite Meteorology, 3D Globe, weather briefing, precipitation type, tropical weather and forecasting (a crowd favorite), weather satellite history, Antarctica, climate change, and aviation weather. Another favorite was the McIDAS workshop led by Gary Wade and Jay Heinzelman.
