Replicate Grilling Success in Antarctica

01 April 2013 – Summer in Antarctica, and when summer comes, can BBQ be far behind?

The Ice Grilling Design and Operations (IGDO) team from SSEC, a subset of the ICDS Team, faced an interesting challenge this past season.

“Given the complexities and the difficulties of grilling in Antarctica,” says the IGDO Lead Grilling Engineer, “we knew that a valuable addition to our skill-set would be the ability to acquire separate grill products without having to duplicate the total grilling effort. Set up and execution of a single grilling event in this climate is very labor-intensive and time-consuming. We needed to eliminate duplication of effort and maximize efficiency.”

IGDO engineers have successfully completed operations of the Replicate Grill in the harshest of conditions.

With Replicate Grilling, the team has advanced the technology. With only a few more minutes of planning and execution, the replicate grill system provides two parallel and yet unique outcomes.

“There was a bit of uncertainty after we performed our first full-fledged replicate grilling test run. Not only the grill itself, but the other specially designed equipment had to perform perfectly. The grilling team was dead silent as we tilted the two-part hood assembly and took our first samples. Success! It was a surreal moment for the grill team and especially for the IGDO engineers."

Prep time is cut nearly in half, while samples for the hungry crew are made available almost twice as fast. And the replicate grill is easily transportable, as well.
