OPEN

Logically equates a unit number with the name of a text file for INPUT and OUTPUT.


Syntax

OPEN filename, unit, reclength


Parameters

filename

valid string expression, less than 13 characters

unit

valid numeric expression

reclength

valid numeric expression; only useful when dealing with old-style or otherwise fixed lengthtext files; must be specified to randomly write(PRINT) data into a file; otherwise, writing is sequential; should be 80 when dealing with oldstyle McIDAS text files, including those created by specifying a DEV=F in McIDAS commands


Remarks

When an OPEN statement is executed, the record pointers for input and output are set to point to the first record of the file (record zero). If these options are omitted from the INPUT or PRINT statements, the next record is used.
