Building and Installing McIDAS-X 2021.1

1. Log on to the workstation as mcidas.

2. Build the desired package (McIDAS-X 2021.1 and/or McIDAS-XRD 2021.1) using the appropriate command below. If building McIDAS-X (by specifying x or all in the packages parameter), this step first makes the ~mcidas installation directories and ~mcidas/mcidas2021.1 package directories (see the tables below). Then, it uncompresses the data files, source files, and man pages. Finally, it makes the help files, compiles the source code, and writes the compiler output to the file ~mcidas/mcidas2021.1/src/makelog.

where packages is one of the three options described below.

• x
  The x option builds only the McIDAS-X package. It is also the default (if you don't specify anything in the packages parameter.)
  
• xrd
  The xrd option builds only the McIDAS-XRD package.
  
• all
  The all option builds both the McIDAS-X and McIDAS-XRD packages, in that order.

and flags is one or more of the three optional flags described below.

• -noopt
  The -noopt flag is used to build McIDAS-X with no optimization. If you don't specify this -noopt flag, McIDAS-X is built using the default optimization, which is -O1 for builds with gcc/gfortran.
• -tcl85
  The -tcl85 flag is used on Linux systems to build McIDAS-X using Tcl/Tk version 8.5.9. If you do not specify the -tcl85 flag, McIDAS-X is built using Tcl/Tk version 8.4.2 on Linux, and 8.5.9 on macOS. Version 8.5.9 allows sites with custom GUIs to utilize some new data/time capabilities and is the only version available for macOS. Users of 8.5.9 may see some problems with scrolling and resizing windows when using the McIDAS-X GUI, Configuration GUI and ASK1 command.
  
• -mysql
  The -mysql flag is used to build McIDAS-X using the MySQL/MariaDB database libraries. This optional flag is mainly for use by McIDAS-XCD sites that elect to use a MySQL/MariaDB database on their -XCD workstations that serve real-time GRIB files from the NOAAPORT data stream. (The database makes access to the GRIB data much faster for -X client workstations.) If using the database on an -XCD workstation, the -mysql flag must be specified when building both McIDAS-X and McIDAS-XCD and the yum install mysql mysql-devel command in the Preparing the Workstation page must be run before building McIDAS-X. If the database is in a non-standard install location, specify the flag as -mysql=directory, where directory is the root MySQL/MariaDB install directory.

Examples:

• sh  ./mcidas2021.1.sh  make  x
  This command builds McIDAS-X 2021.1 using the default compilers.
  
• sh  ./mcidas2021.1.sh  make  all
  This command builds McIDAS-X 2021.1 then McIDAS-XRD 2021.1 using the default compilers.
  
• sh  ./mcidas2021.1.sh  -noopt  make  all
  This command builds McIDAS-X 2021.1 then McIDAS-XRD 2021.1 with no optimization.
  

The message below is displayed if McIDAS-X is selected (by specifying x or all in the packages parameter) and the build is successfully completed.

./mcidas2021.1.sh: McIDAS-X make completed normally.

If McIDAS-XRD is selected (by specifying xrd or all in the packages parameter) and the build is successfully completed, the message is the same as that above, except McIDAS-X is replaced with McIDAS-XRD.

3. Once McIDAS-X and/or McIDAS-XRD 2021.1 are successfully built, uninstall the previous version of the corresponding package(s).

First verify that no McIDAS-X sessions are running. Then enter the command below to uninstall the previous version of the packages, replacing version# with the number of the version (for example, 2020.1).

The messages below are displayed if the uninstall is successfully completed.

./mcidasversion#.sh: McIDAS-X uninstall completed normally.
./mcidasversion#.sh: McIDAS-XRD uninstall completed normally.

4. Run the command below to install the packages (McIDAS-X and/or McIDAS-XRD 2021.1) that you built in step 2 above. You must specify the same option in packages (x, xrd or all) as you did in step 2 above. This step creates hard links from the files in the package directories to the appropriate ~mcidas installation directories.

The message below is displayed if McIDAS-X is selected (by specifying x or all in the packages parameter) and the install is successfully completed.

./mcidas2021.1.sh: McIDAS-X install completed normally.

If McIDAS-XRD is selected (by specifying xrd or all in the packages parameter) and the install is successfully completed, the message is the same as that above, except McIDAS-X is replaced with McIDAS-XRD.
