Installing McIDAS-X on Unix or macOS Workstations

If you are installing McIDAS-X on a workstation running the Windows 7 operating system, go to Installing McIDAS-X on Windows 7 Workstations.

The system administrator or person who installs McIDAS-X will use these installation instructions. The instructions follow the table below, which lists the Unix and macOS software versions compatible with McIDAS-X 2019.1.

McIDAS-X 2019.1 was tested - and is fully supported - on these versions only. In most cases, you should be able to install and run McIDAS-X 2019.1 on workstations running later editions in the same version series (e.g., if McIDAS-X is tested and supported on version 1.2.1, then versions 1.2.2, 1.2.3, etc. are also likely to work correctly). However, please keep in mind that McIDAS User Services is very limited in its ability to acquire and test versions other than those below and thus is limited in its ability to assist in troubleshooting problems that occur with other versions.

macOS Notes:
  1. In order to build and install McIDAS-X on macOS, you must install the Xcode Developer Tools and Command Line Tools on your workstation. Xcode is available via the App Store and from https://developer.apple.com. Command Line Tools are available at https://developer.apple.com/download/more/ (developer login required).
  2. XQuartz is available for free at http://xquartz.macosforge.org/. We recommend installing the latest available version.
  3. The gcc and gfortran compilers are available for free at http://hpc.sourceforge.net. These compilers must be reinstalled if Xcode is updated.
  4. On macOS 10.14 systems, after installing the compilers, you must install the Command Line Tools again, and then install the SDK headers
    (/Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/Packages/macOS_SDK_headers_for_macOS_10.14.pkg).

Linux Notes:
  1. We have encountered problems with the GUI when using the GNOME 3 desktop environment, which is the default on RHEL 7 systems. We recommend installing and using KDE instead. On RHEL 6 systems we recommend using earlier versions of GNOME. Using a different desktop environment on either system may result in the McIDAS-X GUI windows not displaying correctly or at all.
  2. Enterprise Linux does not install the compress utility by default. So you must install compress if you will be configuring your Enterprise Linux workstation as an ADDE remote server.
