Significant Modifications – McIDAS-X v. 2020.1
McIDAS-X v. 2020.1 –
This page contains significant software modifications included in McIDAS-X version 2020.1. The list includes changes that we think are of greatest interest to sites, so is somewhat subjective. See the Fastrack 2020.1 Software Changes to see all of the code changes included in the release.
- Changed supported system configurations and build requirements as follows:
-
- On Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems, changed support from 6.10 Intel and 7.7 Intel to 7.7 Intel and 8.2 Intel.
- On Windows systems, ended support of McIDAS-X on Windows 7 and added preliminary support of McIDAS-X on Windows 10. This 2020.1 package has been successfully installed and run on Windows 10 computers with Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) installed, though some software fixes and documentation needed for full support are still being addressed. As noted in the Microsoft section of the Installing McIDAS-X page in the McIDAS-X User’s Guide, an instructions document for McIDAS-X on Windows 10 is being prepared and will be linked there.
- CMake is now a required package for building McIDAS-X on all platforms. See your configuration’s Installing the Required Packages section in the Preparing the Workstation page of the McIDAS-X User’s Guide for specific instructions.
See the 2020.1 Supported System Configurations for the complete list of system configurations on which McIDAS-X 2020.1 is supported.
-
- Updated GOES-R Series ABI servers with additional bug fixes and enhancements. The changes include:
-
- listing calculated instead of nominal resolutions in IMGLIST FORM=BAND and FORM=ALL output
- adding support of GOES-17 Fusion imagery by updating the servers to work with mission-standard netCDF-4 files beginning with any two characters
- setting the auxiliary block byte offset to the correct value of zero when copying an ABI image to a local AREA file
-
- Updated VIIR servers and calibration module to correctly set the RAW value of Band 18 (M13) pixels to zero in bowtie deletion and bad or missing line regions.
- Updated GEO command to locate correct image when hours-old Himawari imagery is requested, and improved logic when merging imagery from multiple satellites and the domain contains the dateline. Also updated GEODATA.CORE file so that GEO commands that request MSG data use, by default, the MSG datasets on SSEC Satellite Data Services servers that contain complete images. If you use MSG data from another source, you should consider creating a GEODATA.SITE or GEODATA.USER file to point to those ADDE servers.
- Improved performance of RGBDISP command, especially when it is run multiple times in a script. The improvements are due to correcting the initialization of the RGB components and reusing shared memory segments due to the addition of an RGBFRMS.KEY disk file that tracks active segments and cleans them on exit.
- Updated addefunc routine to restore the ability of the IMGLIST command to work with a range of dates on archive servers.
- Updated station database (file STNDB.CORE) to include NAMMOS designation to 196 existing stations and METAR designation to 18 existing stations. Also added TAF designation for stations KWYS, KSBM, KMEV, KDVT, KBAM and removed its designation for stations KGAG and KHBR.
- Updated USCOUNTY.MAP and USZONE.MAP files with the most recent National Weather Service GIS-AWIPS Shapefile database updates. The US*.MAP files are used by the WWDISP command and the MAP command’s COUNTY=, MARINE=, STATE= and ZONE= keywords.
- Updated the McIDAS-XRD Package (which is included in the McIDAS-X installation files) to include one new command (GRAYLABEL, which plots image brightness temperature or albedo values along the grayscale bar) and one updated server (scmiaget, which was modified for GINI serving additions in McIDAS-X 2019.1). Also, the McIDAS-XRD Python Package was updated for RHEL 8 and Python 3. See the McIDAS-XRD Instructions and Software page for the complete list of software included in McIDAS-XRD 2020.1.
