Background
Leads are elongated fractures in the sea ice cover. They form under stresses due to atmospheric winds and ocean currents (e.g., Smith et al., 1990). Leads provide a significant amount of heat and moisture to the Arctic atmosphere (e.g. Alam and Curry 1995, Maykut, 1987).
