At 10:33am PDT, a M6.4 earthquake centered in the Searles Valley, a remote area of Kern County about 100 miles north of Los Angeles, occurred.
This earthquake was the largest in Southern California since the 7.1 Hector Mine earthquake which struck the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps base in October 1999.
Initial reports indicated some damage and fires in the city of Ridgecrest, CA. In addition, there are initial reports of some power outages in Ridgecrest, though the Southern California Edison and Pacific Gas and Electric estimate power restoration by Friday morning.
