AOSS Energy Awareness & Conservation Efforts |
In 2008 a group of energy conscious individuals began meeting twice a month to strategize how we could collectively reduce the carbon footprint of buildings on the UW-Madison campus. Comprised primarily of staff from the Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences building, we soon decided to focus on AOSS and create a model for "Energy Smart Buildings" in close collaboration with Facilities Planning & Management and We Conserve, culminating in an energy awareness campaign in April 2009. This led to 10% less electricity use! In 2009, MG&E donated funds for a solar panel for the roof of AOSS to power a 3D spherical display of satellite imagery on the first floor, modeling the Sun-Earth energy system and the first essential principal of climate literacy. Electricity generated by the AOSS solar panels goes directly into the building, offsetting power required by the 3D globe and reducing the overall carbon footprint of the building. For more details on the Energy Smart AOSS initiative view this 2009 power-point presentation. The following year, Helen C. White Library pursued a similar Energy Smart initiative, trimming the carbon footprint of the UW campus even further.
